« Bed of Roses the first single from the album (which is due out April 21) features performances from Starr and Mike Campbell of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
The singer, who started out with band Mott the Hoople, began working on the album in 2020 as the lockdowns began, writing with producer and multi-instrumentalist Andy York. On the suggestions of some friends, Hunter began contacting musicians he knew to see if they would contribute to the album. ” Nobody was doing anything he explains in a statement. It was Covid. No one was going anywhere. We started sending them. Slash started doing something. Metallica’s Robert Trujillo. Ringo Starr, Mike Campbell. Joe Elliott is on a few tracks. Johnny Depp said: “Jeff Beck is with me and we would like to do some songs”. I know Todd Rundgren, I toured with Todd a long time ago, he did a wonderful job. Billy Gibbon. Billy Bob Thornton and JD Andrew of the Boxmasters. It’s endless. Every day, we received a phone call, one guy wants to do it, another wants to do it. I could not believe it. »
The singer intends to later release a Defiance Part 2, which will also feature an expanded guest list.
In 2019. Hunter spoke to Rolling Stone of the music he was working on as well as his creative process: ” I usually write the lyrics between 4 and 6 in the morning. Then I come down here between 4 and 6 in the afternoon and check, see if it works. I’m working on a lot of stuff right now. There’s an album over there [il montre les cassettes de l’autre côté de la pièce]. These are my new songs. I don’t know if they will all pass the process. But we will go to the studio in August. »
