Stoke City player ratings from Rollercoaster Afternoon on Sheffield Wednesday

Stoke City's 2-0 away win saw them celebrate their first away win of the season and eventually look like a promotion team. But at 2-1 they had a sense of what could happen and it came true when Wednesday's break took advantage of their chances and Stoke squandered them.

MARTIN SPINKS rates the Potters at the Hillsborough parade …

BUTLAND: Not always in perfect harmony with his back four, but important saves in the second half, before he remains helpless with Bannan's free kick 6

MARTINA: Great energy and regularly trying to get involved, even if the end product was not always first class 7

PIETER: A particularly cool (foolish) header back to the goal, but otherwise the strength was defensive at the right time 6

SCARF CROSS: Questions about Wednesday in the first half, but strong in the air when needed 6

MARTIN'S INDI: Like his skipper, it will be surprising what happened at the first goal, but otherwise he was mostly defensive 6

FOREST: On one occasion once in possession, but otherwise on the first appearance a very polished display and we will see much more of this guy 7

ETEBO: Decision making an occasional worry, but that will come with experience, and otherwise justified, to keep its place 7

ALLEN: Much more like his old self, but he will curse the free-kick he gave that led to the second Wednesday 6

INCE: Appearance of quality on the ball, even if he could have pulled the trigger one or two times himself 7

DIOUF: Touch him a few times and might be better with a few second-half goals at the gate 6

Afobe: He was much more alive in his two-goal return to form and with a bit more luck he could have achieved a decisive third goal 7

BOJAN (for Diouf, 84): A few runs with the ball at his feet and a late free kick well survived 6

CROUCH (for Afobe, 86): The height was introduced for the own penalty area as well as those of the opposition 6

Not used: Federici, Williams, Berahino, Edwards.

REFEREE: Geoff Eltringham (Co Durham) 7
