Kilometers high pile of books
From the category of useless knowledge, or perhaps something for small talk in the office: In the past year, so many new books were published that they would be about two kilometers high when stacked on top of each other. 2,057 meters to be precise. We owe this number to the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels, which did the math.
The Börsenverein has also published further figures, according to which the book market has weathered the 2020 pandemic well. The fiction market grew by 4.0 percent compared to 2019. The number of new publications fell by 1.7 percent, and that for school books by as much as 9.7 percent. The children’s and young people’s book turned out to be stable. However, bookstores lost a market share of 9.0 percent as a sales channel – while online bookshops grew by 20.9 percent.
