Thunderstorms spread in Bavaria at the start of the week. In the meantime, there was also a crash in Munich. Expect rainy days now.

Update from May 24, 06:15: The weather in the Bavarian capital has calmed down. After heavy thunderstorms on Monday evening, there is now almost no wind in Munich on Tuesday morning and it is still surprisingly mild. However, the sky is gray and will probably remain so until Thursday for the most part. In addition, the chance of rain is very high throughout the day, especially on Tuesday.

Storm with hail in Bavaria: Munich is spared

Outside the state capital, the storms are much more severe. A storm with hail and heavy rain has fallen in the Allgäu. There have been several operations, especially in the Ostallgäu, including in Füssen, underground car parks or basements have filled with water, a police spokesman said on Monday. So far, however, there have been no reports of injuries.

The German Weather Service (DWD) warned of severe thunderstorms until Tuesday night, especially in the Alps and in the southern foothills. Heavy rain of up to 40 liters per square meter is possible in a short time, as are hailstones five centimeters in size and hurricane-force gusts of up to 120 kilometers per hour. During the night, the greatest danger should then slowly be over.

Update from May 23, 10:42 p.m.: The storm front has meanwhile moved eastwards via Munich, and no further thunderstorms are to be feared for the night. Thunderstorms are only to be expected in Lower Bavaria until they leave Bavaria around midnight.

Continuous rain is to be expected in Munich from tomorrow morning. The temperatures fluctuate loudly wetteronline then at almost 15 degrees.

Update from May 23, 8:50 p.m.: So now the time had come, a strong thunderstorm has spread in Munich. Thunder, lightning and heavy rain, including strong winds, kept the promise of the German weather service, which had warned of severe weather. The “worst part” should now be over for the state capital, but an official warning from the German Weather Service against thunderstorms still applies. The turbulent weather conditions apply up to and including 1 a.m. on Tuesday.

Update from May 23, 20:02: Red alert in Munich! The German Weather Service urgently warns of thunderstorms in the state capital. Literally it says: “Thunderstorms are approaching from the southwest. There are hurricane-like gusts with speeds of up to 110 km/h as well as heavy rain with precipitation amounts of up to 30 l/m² per hour and small-grain hail. The severe storms, as the DWD call them, also pose a danger to life.

“Lightning is life-threatening! Among other things, widespread severe damage to buildings is possible. Trees can be uprooted and roof tiles, branches or objects can fall. Flooding of cellars and streets as well as local flooding of streams and small rivers are possible (details: For example, landslides can occur. Close all windows and doors! Secure items outdoors! In particular, keep your distance from buildings, trees, scaffolding and high-voltage lines! Try to avoid staying outside!”

Update from May 23, 7:31 p.m.: For a short time, the first clouds cleared over Munich, but the all-clear has not yet been given. Furthermore, thunderstorms can occur again and again up to and including midnight. So if you still have to go outside today, you should urgently take an umbrella with you and look for a roof over your head in the event of a thunderstorm.

The warning applies not only to the city of Munich, but also to the surrounding region.

Update from May 23, 4:23 p.m.: Dark clouds over Munich! The German weather service has issued an official warning for the state capital. Heavy thunderstorms are possible from now on. Specifically, it says: “There are local thunderstorms coming from the southwest. There are severe gusts of wind with speeds of up to 90 km/h as well as heavy rain with precipitation amounts of up to 25 l/m² per hour and hail.”

The warning is currently valid until 6 p.m., but there is another general warning about thunderstorms up to and including 12 a.m.

Update from May 23, 3 p.m.: According to the DWD weather map, severe thunderstorms are brewing in western Bavaria. From the afternoon to the evening and into the night, warnings of heavy rain, heavy hail and hurricane-force gusts apply throughout Bavaria. The heavy thunderstorms are also moving towards Munich.

The DWD says: “From the early afternoon hours of Monday, strong thunderstorms will come from the west and south-west. Heavy rain of between 25 and 40 l/sqm is to be expected in a short time. Other side effects are larger hail of 4 cm and hurricane-force gusts of 115 km/h. Over the course of Tuesday night, the thunderstorms will gradually move eastwards.”

The storm potential is particularly high in Lower and Middle Franconia, in the foothills of the Alps and in Swabia. even warns of hail damage.
