INDOZONE.ID – A woman with cancer has been infected with the coronavirus for almost a year. This makes it one of the longest-running COVID-19 cases ever reported.
The 47-year-old woman was first treated at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Maryland for Covid-19 in the spring of 2020.
However, the infection continued for 335 days. The test results have also repeatedly tested positive for Covid-19 with symptoms that still arise, and require additional oxygen at home.
Although his test came back positive, the level of the virus in his body was barely detectable for months after his initial infection.
Then, in March 2021, the virus levels spiked again. The researchers compared the genomes of samples collected during the initial infection with more recent ones and found the virus was the same.
In other words, these patients were not reinfected, but continued to harbor the same virus for almost a year.
Quoted from Live Science, the corona virus is likely to last a long time in the woman’s body because her immune system is compromised due to treatment for lymphoma or cancer in the immune system.
He was treated with CAR-T cell therapy about three years ago, which weakens his immune system by depleting most of the B cells or immune system cells that make antibodies.
Fortunately now, the woman, the lymphoma patient, has recovered from Covid-19 with several negative Covid-19 tests since last April.
