Braunschweig is therefore the most sustainable city in Germany. With a possible 100 points, Braunschweig did particularly well in the criterion for vegetarian and vegan restaurants. The air quality also scored points. The travel portal Omio recorded the data as part of a representative study, the survey was conducted in 80 major German cities. The data requested also included how bicycle-friendly a municipality is and what tickets cost for local transport. In the ranking created from this, other northern German cities appear at the top places alongside Braunschweig. Göttingen in 7th place, followed by Wolfsburg (15) and Hanover (16). Oldenburg (33), Hildesheim (40) and Osnabrück (46) follow further behind.
Wolfsburg and Göttingen have good air quality
In this study, the ranking depended heavily on the weighting of the individual criteria. Measured in terms of sustainable transport, Göttingen was ahead in Lower Saxony, but there were also 92 out of 100 possible points for air quality. And in Wolfsburg, the air quality was even rated the best. Leader Braunschweig benefits from the fact that vegetarian and vegan dishes were rated so highly as a sustainability factor. Perhaps an indication that the author of the study is a travel portal that wants to appeal to young people. Incidentally, the city of Essen is at the bottom of the ranking in Germany – due to poor air quality.
