Study Claims The Keto Diet Improves Sperm Quality

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia –

Diet keto has been popular in the community because of its various benefits. Most recently, the keto diet is claimed to improve quality sperm.

It is found in new case studies conducted by researchers from the Universidade de Sao Paulo, Brazil. The report found that two obese men lost weight on the keto diet, as well as experienced significant increases in sperm count and quality.

In the first example, participants lost nearly 60 pounds or about 27.2 kilograms in the three-month diet period. Sperm quality also increased by almost 100 percent, with testosterone levels also more than doubling.

Meanwhile, in the second case, participants lost 20 pounds or about 9 kilograms of body weight over three months. Participants also experienced an increase in sperm quality by up to 30 percent. However, unlike the first participant, testosterone levels in the second participant actually decreased.

Quoting Insider, these results were obtained after both participants had a diet called Pronokal. The latter is a commercial weight loss method launched in Spain in 2004. This method bears a resemblance to the keto diet, which focuses on low-carb intake.

Two patients may not be a large enough sample size to draw broader conclusions about the relationship between the keto diet and sperm quality.

Experts say there is no specific type of diet that can specifically improve sperm quality. Increased sperm count when dieting occurs with decreasing body weight. The more ideal body weight, the better sperm quality a man has.

“I don’t think there’s anything specific to the keto diet that can help fertility,” said reproductive endocrinologist Tanmoy Mukherjee, citing Health.

Mukherjee explains, any type of diet can help a person achieve a healthy weight. Healthy weight has been shown to improve sperm quality.

“Any diet that helps you achieve a healthy lifestyle will likely affect your sperm quality and fertility rates,” explains Mukherjee. Including the keto diet.
