Study finds benefit of beet juice for those who train

Rewrite this content

Beetroot juice has been linked to improved performance in physical training and endurance sports. Now, a recent study done by researchers at the University of Exeter, UK, concluded that this drink can increase endurance and make people improve performance by up to 16%.

Responsible for the benefit would be dietary inorganic nitrate – the main active ingredient in beetroot juice – which acts to regulate blood flow, blood pressure, glucose homeostasis and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Active in beet juice increases the amount of oxygen that reaches the muscles, favoring the gain of physical resistance

Researchers believe that nitrate can reduce oxygen consumption to an extent that cannot be achieved by any other known means, thereby making exercise less tiring.

The effects

In the study, published in the journal Nutrients, researchers investigated the effects of a beetroot juice supplement 120 minutes before training compared to a placebo on muscle endurance.

They noted that the supplement appeared to increase muscular endurance by increasing the number of repetitions performed.

According to the researchers, a greater volume of blood and oxygen – caused by the active ingredient – is an important component of muscular endurance. According to them, a greater supply of oxygen delays the onset of muscle fatigue and leads to an increase in energy production.
