O The study of Alzheimer’s disease generated international recognition for a Brazilian professor and researcher at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, UFRJ.
Mychael Lourenço, a member of the university’s Laboratory of Neurodegenerative Diseases, appeared on the list of 11 young researchers to keep an eye on in 2023, in the scientific journal Nature Medicineconsidered a reference among journals.
The publication highlights promising researchers who are leading the way in their respective fields.
For Mychael, receiving the award was an honor: “It is recognition of Brazilian science. It is an important distinction because it is one of the world’s leading scientific journals in its field. And it was also nice to realize that their choice respects criteria of diversity, geography, ethnicity, gender. So, I felt honored to receive this nomination.”
Mychael adds that he has always been fascinated with understanding how the brain works. And he gives more details about the objectives of the study developed: “We are interested in the mechanisms, in the initial molecular changes that happen in the brain, eventually before the symptoms appear, and we also want to take this information from these changes that happen in the brain to try to propose therapeutic strategies, strategies that can interrupt, reverse or prevent, in fact, the development of Alzheimer’s disease, which is a serious problem worldwide, is the main cause of dementia and has increased significantly in terms of incidence in Brazil”.
The scientist also points out that among the results already obtained in the analysis, there is the conclusion that physical exercise is an important protective factor of the brain against memory loss in Alzheimer’s disease.
