Vidal Brujan hit a double in the 10th inning for his first hit of the season, and the Tampa Bay Rays bounced back from losing in a run-free game the night before, with a 4-2 victory over the Angels of Los Angeles, Wednesday.
A night after rookie Reid Detmers pitched the 12th game without a run or hit in Angels franchise history, Tampa Bay halted its three-game slide and avoided a series sweep.
The game was a pitching duel until the eighth, with Tampa Bay’s Shane McClanahan holding off Shohei Ohtani. McClanahan tied a career high with 11 strikeouts in seven innings. He allowed three hits.
Ohtani gave up two hits and walked two in six innings for the Angels, while striking out five batters with 92 pitches.
Pitch-hitter Taylor Ward hit a two-run homer in the eighth for the Angels, whose three-game winning streak ended. It’s only the fifth loss in 18 games for them. Los Angeles is 21-12, not enough to match the best start in club history after 33 games.
Kevin Kiermaier hit a solo homer in second for Tampa Bay. He also scored from second in the 10th when Brujan hit a left double against Aaron Loup (0-2). Brujan then stole the third and scored on hitter Harold Ramirez’s single.
JP Feyereisen (3-0) pitched the ninth for the Rays.
Kiermaier hit a hanging sliding from Ohtani into the right field bleachers in second, ending 12 scoreless innings for Tampa Bay. With yesterday’s game without a run or hit, the Rays had a 36-batter drought before getting a first hit.
Ohtani also got a hit and stole second base in the fourth inning.
Ward’s seventh homer of the season was the first homer by an Angels pinch hitter since September 2019.
