For fear of Corona, the international airport chaos and canceled flights, the TCS expects a sharp increase in car trips to the south. This is said to result in massive traffic jams and overcrowded holiday villages in July and August.

The fear of being infected with Corona and the chaotic conditions at many international airports this year are encouraging Swiss people to travel by car. The Swiss Touring Club (TCS) is therefore expecting record travel to the Mediterranean in the coming weeks, as the «Sunday newspaper» reported.

According to the TCS general director, this also applies to Germans and Dutch people. In July and August there should therefore be a lot of traffic jams on the roads, especially on those towards the Mediterranean. Holiday destinations such as Italy, France, Spain, Portugal and Croatia were also not spared from the large onslaught of cars. There will be traffic jams and fights for parking spaces in the narrow streets of the smaller Mediterranean villages and along the beaches.

«Mid-July to mid-August is the busiest time»

TCS considers mid-July to mid-August to be particularly busy. Travelers need patience and strong nerves, especially in Italy, because it can take several hours there for a breakdown service to be called, the “SonntagsZeitung” continues to quote the TCS. Among other things, because of the lack of staff. A good piece of advice is therefore to “have your car checked thoroughly before you travel” so that breakdowns don’t occur in the first place. The oil level, the battery and the spare wheel should play a special role.

In addition, it is not enough to leave a day earlier for the journey south. According to experts, it would even make sense to plan vacations from Wednesday to Wednesday, for example.
