Support for criticized Ajax player Álvarez: ‘Then more appreciation for him automatically’

The fact that Edson Álvarez is heading for a basic place in Ajax’s midfield leads to criticism here and there, but Ryan Gravenberch stands up for the Mexican. The eighteen-year-old Jong Oranje player feels at ease with Álvarez next to him.

“Edson is an opeater, I call it, someone who takes the ball and returns it right away. It’s nice to have a player like that next to you”, Gravenberch emphasizes opposite. The Telegraph. “There is sometimes criticism of Edson, but that is mainly because he does not stand out. If people really pay attention to him, they will automatically appreciate him more. I think Edson had a very good preparation.”

Gravenberch also pays a compliment to director of football affairs Marc Overmars. “Ajax has made very good purchases”, the midfielder says. “I think Mo Kodus is a really good player. He is physically strong, barely off the ball. And Antony is skilful and fast.”

Ajax starts the new Eredivisie season on Sunday at 2.30 p.m. with an away match against Sparta.
