“Survey Reveals the Rudest and Most Courteous Cities in Spain: How Do They Compare?”

Spain is one of the favorite tourist destinations in the world, due to its gastronomy, its climate and its culture. We Spaniards stand out for a high level of expressiveness when it comes to showing emotions, compared to our European neighbours, which may seem, in the eyes of others, not to be particularly formal.

However, not all of us express ourselves in the same way or have the same degree of courtesy. A study has just highlighted this issue. The survey carried out by the PREPLY Platform has made it possible to quantify what level of ‘education’ we Spaniards have, depending on our city.

For it, more than 1,500 residents of 19 areas of Spain have been interviewed and have been asked how often they encounter rude behaviour, their opinion on tipping, and who they think is the rudest, locals or outsiders.

The results of the study show Santa Cruz de Tenerife as the most ‘rude’ city. On a scale of 0 to 10, the city’s residents rate themselves at 6.06. The aspects that they themselves highlight to obtain this score are: “being noisy in public”, “getting absorbed with the mobile” and “not greeting strangers”.

After Santa Cruz de Tenerife, they are followed in the table by Granada and Alicante-Elche.

  1. Santa Cruz of Tenerife

  2. Granada

  3. Alicante-Elche

  4. Saint Sebastian

  5. Bilbao

  6. Palma de Mallorca

  7. Barcelona

  8. Málaga

  9. Valladolid

  10. Madrid

The Galician city of Vigo leads the ranking among the cities where its residents behave in a more courteous manner. Even sorecognize the problem of paying attention to the mobile.

Vigo is followed by other cities such as La Coruña or Valencia as the cities where their citizens recognize better behavior.

  1. Vigo

  2. A Coruña-Olerios-Arteixo

  3. Valencia

  4. Murcia-Orihuela

  5. Oviedo-Gijón-Avilés

  6. The Gran Canarian palms

  7. Zaragoza

  8. Sevilla

  9. Cadiz

  10. Madrid

Although the findings show that some cities are ruder than others, the study shows that, in general, Spaniards are quite polite people in public. Using a scale from one to ten (where ten is the highest score), the average score for all cities in Spain is 5.53.

Paying attention only to the phone, not welcoming strangers, making noise or not giving a tip are the aspects that we Spaniards do most frequently. In the study, other behaviors such as jumping queues, not slowing down at a crosswalk, having bad body language or not respecting individual space.
