|In short – Toyota Yaris Cross|
|What is this?||Building on the foundations of the 2020 Yaris, a slightly larger, a little taller, a little more off-road little urban RV from 2021|
|What do you know?||Tiny, cute, can be petrol or hybrid, and can be purchased with front or all-wheel drive|
|How much does it cost?||HUF 5,990,000 is the entry to the Yaris Cross Club, and the top version can be taken around HUF 11.3 million|
|Who is good for?||Anyone who can’t or doesn’t want to break off the city’s recreational car line will also like the Yaris Cross, especially if you want a Toyota|
Many have been waiting for it, and finally even the smallest Toyota-logo recreational car has run into it, making the Yaris Cross an even wider range of Toyota SUV models. The line starts in size with the Yaris Cross, one size larger than the C-HR, then comes the RAV4, and the other extreme is the Highlander. Or, if we really want to, we can even take the Land Cruiser here, but it will be offended if someone just s-SUVs it. So there is a lot to choose from. But what good is it and what does the current smallest and youngest Toyota SUV know? We were also curious about this in connection with the Hungarian presentation that took place this week.
The weather is not exactly ideal for touring the car
Why he was born is understandable: in recent years, this segment – small recreational cars – has spun the most. Not so long ago, only a few models in this category were shared by customers, and today this field has almost 20 riders, and no one wants to miss the party. Neither did Toyota, so they grabbed the basics of the Yaris and carved a little trickier stuff out of it. The rugged Cross version is 24 inches longer than the plain Yaris – 6 inches from the front and 18 inches at the back – 9 inches taller, 2 inches wider and 3 inches more. However, its wheelbase remained unchanged at 256 cm.
Compared to its size, the Yaris’ relative has taken on a serious atmosphere, and the angular details – the wheel arches and the grille – are somewhat reminiscent of the RAV4. In addition to more serious free ground clearance, there are also plastic inserts as it fits
The wheelbase alone did not increase, but in all other directions the Yaris Cross is larger than the field Yaris. Unsurprisingly, the interior has also become more spacious, and the leadership position has also been higher with something that urban peoples are happy to enjoy. Inside, civilized materials await the passengers, the instrument panel and its surroundings can be grasped and pressed, and in most cases the material is pleasant to the touch. What you don’t want to keep in hand are tiny pockets and compartments. The space on a rainy, quick test isn’t even depressing at the back, not even 190 inches, although the borders are very close and the back door doesn’t open at a big enough angle either. The backrests of the seats can be tilted in a ratio of 40:20:40, so you can put things that are quite long in the middle without having to give up the passengers.
The boot of the Yaris Cross is 390 liters – the hybrid, all-wheel drive version is slightly smaller at just 320 liters. On the other hand, it can be varied well, the floor height can be adjusted in two pieces in the double-bottom luggage compartment, and there are also various luggage-fixing lugs. The motorized tailgate is said to be twice as fast as we were used to with the brand, so there is no longer a painful amount of time elapsed during each opening or closing.
The Yaris Cross is also available as a smooth petrol and hybrid, but in both cases a 1.5-liter, three-cylinder petrol engine gets into the nose of the car, with 125 horsepower in the petrol and 88 horsepower in the hybrid. The latter, complemented by an electric motor, offers the driver 116 horsepower system power, the pure petrol has a peak torque of 153 and the hybrid 120 Nm.
The transmission is available in six-speed manual and CVT for petrol versions, and the hybrid is also available with e-CVT and AWD’s fancy-name intelligent all-wheel drive, which sends 100 percent of the torque to the front wheels by default, but can do so at 40:60 split between front and rear wheels. All this without the waste of space, with an electric rear drive, which only helps the drive when starting and accelerating or in the event of loss of traction.
It will be possible to find out how to drive around July and August at the earliest, when the international presentation of the model is planned. The pieces at home, exhibited and participating in the tour are still pre-series cars, so it is worth waiting for the official presentation with the test drive, or seeing the first Hungarian specimens towards the end of September.
Not only in size but also in price, the prices of two existing Toyota models, quite precisely between the Yaris and C-HR, were shot down in the Yaris Cross. The price of the Yaris in the field still has to raise about 800 thousand forints for those who wanted the more massive Cross version. This means in numbers that the new model will be fired at customers with a wallet filled with between 5.9 and 10 million forints, where the entry price of the hybrid is 7.2 million forints. It is planned to sell 650 units of it this September, but next year, in the first full year, Toyota expects much more serious sales of 1,650 units, of which 80 percent will be front-wheel drive and 80 percent will be hybrids.
The equipment level called Active is the base followed by Comfort, to which Tech and Style packages can be added as an option. The next levels are Executive and Adventure, with Adventure still up, and this is the Premiere Edition. The various packages include the 7-inch Toyota Touch2 system, but heated front seats, front-rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, LED daytime running lights, LED headlights, taillights, lane-keeping assistants are also available for the car. The Executive is the most elegant, which also means Smart Cargo system, sporty seats, while the Premiere covers leather upholstery, head up display and tailgate.
At first, the Toyota Yaris Cross looks like a promising tiny RV in torrential rain, even when standing still. The design is fashionable, the furniture is decent, it is also available as a hybrid and plain petrol, and there is a real, usable all-wheel drive on the list, and you can’t go wrong with an SUV. And Toyota wants to see the Yaris Cross among the top three in the category soon. Which is not an impossible opportunity.
