Since June 13, 2022, China has banned the import of grouper from Taiwan. The reason is said to be banned chemicals found in previous shipments. Taiwan’s government denies the allegations and describes the import ban as politically motivated. The controversy over the grouper is reminiscent of the import ban on waxy apples, cinnamon apples and pineapples from Taiwan that China imposed last year.

In today’s “Headlines of the Week” Bihui Chiu and Tatjana Romig discuss Taiwan’s agricultural exports to China, the latest import ban and how Taiwan is now trying to diversify sales markets.
