Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Tencent announced to its staff the official formation of the “extended reality” (XR) unit. According to three sources with knowledge, said, with the formation, the company officially entered the virtual world of the metaverse.
This unit was tasked with building an expanded reality business for Tencent, including software and hardware. The business unit will be led by Tencent Games Global Chief Technology Officer Li Shen and will be part of the company’s Interactive Entertainment business group.
The unit will have more than 300 staff, amid circumstances where Tencent has cut costs and slowed hiring.
The unit was first formed earlier this year but is still full of secrets. Extended reality is a term that refers to immersive technologies such as virtual reality and augmented reality, which are seen as the building blocks of the metaverse.
Investors, entrepreneurs, and technology giants around the world have indeed begun to adopt the concept of the metaverse, since Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO who recently changed his name to Meta.
Call it Microsoft to Disney have announced that they are also working on their own metaverse project. Do not want to miss the Chinese and US companies that own TikTok-ByteDance until Apple also builds their headset units that involve XR technology.
One source said the unit was seen internally as a passionate project of Tencent founder and chief executive Pony Ma that first highlighted the importance of the metaverse, or what he calls the “all-real internet” in late 2020.
The introduction of the new team is different from the downsizing that has occurred in other parts of Tencent.
Until now, Tencent has not openly admitted to the public about its metaverse development plan. Last November, the company told analysts it had many of the technology building blocks and capabilities to approach the metaverse opportunity, but didn’t go into details.
