Tencent in plans to buy the video game studio Sumo

by archyw

Perhaps many do not know it, but Tencent is one of the most powerful multinational companies in the world, with a large capital that has led them to buy completely or partially some of the most important companies in electronic entertainment.

Thus, many of the most popular games in the world are precisely part of Tencent and now it seems that they are about to acquire another developer studio for an impressive sum of money.

Tencent x Little Big Planet

Whether you’ve played Little Big Planet or not, you’ve surely heard of the franchise, as it has kept us entertained by creating worlds while having fun with friends and family.

Both the third installment and the spin-off for PlayStation, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, were created by the studio called Sumo Digital and this is precisely Tencent’s goal for its next big purchase in the world of video games.

And it is that not only Little Big Planet and Sackboy has lived the study, but they have great games to their credit, within which we can find the following:

  • Virtua Tennis 3
  • Sega Superstars Tennis
  • Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing
  • Dead Space Ignition
  • Xbox Fitness
  • Crackdown 3
  • Forza Horizon 2
  • And many, many other games more.

It is undoubtedly an important development study and that is why Tencent is looking to buy it for the amount of twelve hundred and sixty million dollars ($ 1,260,000,000).

The ramifications of what this could mean we cannot know yet, but it seems that the developer would continue with its operations as normal, although nothing has been said about it yet.

What we know comes from part of the offer that Tencent itself made to the video game developer Sumo Group, which can be found below, at this link. As soon as we know much more about this, we will let you know as soon as possible.

Why is Tencent so important?

Almost as if it were the Disney of video games, Tencent has been interested in acquiring all or part of different video game companies, which really are very varied, both in the work they do and in the amount of them that belongs to Tencent.

Interestingly, the purchase that could be carried out by this multinational would be made in its entirety, since it is a complete acquisition and not just a percentage of Sumo Group. What would make it one of those companies that would become completely part of the multinational that wants to buy them.

As for companies that have been partially acquired by this technology giant, we can find Activision-Blizzard (5%), Ubisoft (5%) Epic Games (40%), Riot Games (100%) and many others.

So while he is not in control of everything we play, he does have partial control of almost everything that can be seen in the market, and now with this new purchase he could surely get even more into our digital lives.

In the meantime, we can only wait for everything that may arise about this purchase and see how it will affect this gaming market that is not strange in company purchases, because recently we could also see one of the largest acquisitions in the video game history thanks to Microsoft buying Bethesda, making its future games exclusive to Xbox platforms.
