Testosterone replacement therapy could slow the progression of COPD

Washington: According to one study, testosterone replacement therapy may slow the progression of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

COPD is a chronic inflammatory lung disease that causes a clogged airflow from the lungs. The World Health Organization forecasts the third leading cause of disease and death worldwide by 2030. Low testosterone is common in men with COPD and can worsen their condition. Men with COPD have shortness of breath and often take steroid-based medications for a longer period of time, both of which increase their risk of low testosterone.

"Previous studies have shown that testosterone replacement therapy in men with COPD could have a positive effect on lung function," said Jacques Baillargeon of the University of Texas Medical School in Galveston.

The aim of the study was to find out whether testosterone replacement therapy reduces the risk of COPD in middle-aged and old-age respiratory hospitalizations.

"We found that testosterone users suffered a greater decline in airway hospitalizations compared to non-users, especially middle-aged testosterone replacement therapists, who had a 4.2 percent greater decline in airway hospitalizations compared to non-users, and older testosterone replacement therapy users had a 9.1 percent more respiratory decline hospitalizations compared to non-users, "said Baillargeon.

"The results suggest that testosterone replacement therapy can slow the progression of the disease in men with COPD," he added.

The study appears in the journal Chronic Respiratory Disease.
