Patrick Rooney is the star player and top performer at the squash Bundesliga club 1. Bremer SC. Soon the Englishman wants to be among the best in the world.
There was a lot going on at the 1st Bremer Squash Club at the weekend. The Bundesliga team played four games in its own hall against competitors from the north. Bremen won three games without losing points, only in the derby against Sportwerk Hamburg did the hosts win thanks to the more sets won – and because of Patrick Rooney. The 24-year-old is a professional squasher and comes from England, but has been playing for Bremer SC for four years. Even more: Rooney is only coming to the games.
Bremen is a great city, the club is great, and I was welcomed very nicely. Every time I come I like it more.

The Bremen-based points guarantee trains up to five hours a day. But what is also necessary, because if you want to be successful in squash, you need strength, stamina, mobility and ball security. The Englishman is also highly regarded in his team. “You never know where the ball is going,” says Rooney’s team-mate Heiko Schwarzer. “He has an incredible hand.”
Squash peaked in the 1980s
Although squash is one of the fringe sports in this country, the German Squash Association has more than 10,000 members. The sport experienced its heyday in the 1980s. At times there were almost 1,000 squash courts in Germany. According to the association, there were still around 320 in 2019. In Great Britain, on the other hand, squash is a popular sport.
Rooney is not only one of the Bundesliga to-players, but is already number 41 in the world rankings. In July, he even takes part in the World Cup in Chicago. But Rooney wants more. “I want to make it into the top ten, maybe also the top five in the world,” said the 24-year-old.
Bremer SC is fighting for the German championship
For now, however, Rooney is focusing on the Bundesliga. The Bremer SC is after the first of two double match days in the second place in the table of the north relay. If the Bremen team is still runner-up after the next match day in Paderborn next weekend, they will qualify for the Final Four tournament in Frankfurt. There it is about the German championship. However, it is unclear whether Rooney can participate in the upcoming games. Due to the corona pandemic, the entry of the Englishman is extremely difficult.
