The Aphelion Phenomenon Makes Coughs and Colds, Hoax or Fact?

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Space phenomenon Aphelion or when the position of the Earth is farthest from the Sun occurs on Monday (4/7). There are many hoaxes about Aphelion that have been circulating, one of which makes the Earth cooler and then makes humans sick with coughs and colds.

When Aphelion occurred, Earth was 94.51 million miles or 152.1 million kilometers from the Sun, said geophysicist Chris Vaughan.

Earth is 1.67 percent farther from the Sun than the average distance between the two, known as an astronomical unit. Reported Spaceone astronomical unit is equivalent to 92.96 million miles or 149.6 million km.

Vaughan, who oversees the Night Sky calendar using the SkySafari software, said that when Earth’s position is away from the sun, seasonal variations in temperature are said to arise from different directions of Earth’s axial tilt, as opposed to distance from the sun.

The angle of inclination affects whether sunlight hits the Earth at a lower or higher angle and is thought to be the cause of cough and cold season.

The opposite of Aphelion, when the Earth’s position is closest to the Sun called Perihelion will occur on January 4, 2023. At that time the Earth is 91.4 million miles or 147.1 million km from the Sun according to Time And Date.

Aphelion and Perihelion occur because the earth’s orbit is not a perfect circle with an eccentricity value of 0.01671.

Venus is a planet whose orbit is a perfect circle. The planet ranges between 66 million miles (107 million km) and 68 million miles (109 million km) from the sun, according to Universe Today.

Professor of IPB (Bogor Agricultural University) in Theoretical Physics as well as a lecturer in Complex Systems Physics of the Undergraduate Physics Study Program (S1) Professor Husin Alatas explained that Aphelion every year occurs in the early July range.

When compared to the average distance between the Earth and the Sun, the deviation of the Aphelion point is only 1.68 percent, as well as the Perihelion point.

Husin further explained the effect of the tilt of the Earth’s rotational axis compared to the 23-degree orbital plane that causes the difference in seasons between the northern and southern hemispheres, so that it is said that the influence of Aphelion and Perihelion is practically very small on the weather on Earth.

“Therefore, extreme weather that can have an impact on health such as the appearance of cough and cold symptoms cannot be caused by the two positions of the Earth from the Sun,” said Husin who is also the Executive Secretary of the Center for Transdisciplinary and Sustainability Science (CTSS) IPB.

According to Husin, global warming has a more significant impact on the recent extreme weather conditions.

He said this year’s Aphelion will be short, starting on July 4, 2022 at 14:10 WIB.

The distance between the Earth and the Sun is 152,098,455 kilometers. Meanwhile, on Perihelion on January 4 at 13:52 WIB, the distance between the Earth and the Sun was 147,105,052 kilometers, based on Time And Date.

“Physically it is difficult to feel the influence of the position of Aphelion and Perihelion, considering that the deviation of the intensity of the Sun’s energy reaching the earth compared to the annual average is only about 3.5 percent,” he said. Husin.

Aphelion and Perihelion are routine dynamics of nature related to the Earth’s elliptical orbit. According to Husin, this does not need to be positioned as a phenomenon that has a negative impact on health that can appear in the dynamics of the weather.

The two special positions of the Earth have a relatively small effect compared to their average conditions, so they are said to be less likely to cause extreme weather conditions.

“Avoiding hoaxes related to natural phenomena associated with certain bad conditions needs to be done by prioritizing critical and skeptical attitudes, and relying on true science and not pseudo science,” he stressed.
