The Whitehorse 2020 Arctic Winter Games has been canceled due to concerns about the novel corona virus.
“Cancellation of the 2020 Arctic Winter Games was found to be the most responsible precaution,” said a statement from the city of Whitehorse, the Yukon government, and the competition’s host company.
“This decision is a direct result of concerns about the proliferation of COVID-19 and is supported by the International Arctic Winter Games Committee.”
The recommendation came from Yukon’s Acting Chief Medical Officer of Health.
Almost 2,000 athletes, coaches, organizers and spectators were expected at the games.
According to the same statement, there are currently no COVID-19 cases in the area.
Last week officials at the Arctic Winter Games said the risk was low and they had taken all necessary precautions to avoid a COVID 19 outbreak at this year’s Whitehorse event.
