The Breast Unit of the Hospital Universitari Arnau de Vilanova (HUAV) in Lleida has recently incorporated the areola and nipple micropigmentation technique for cancer patients as the “last phase of breast reconstruction”.
In a statement on Monday, the hospital reported that there are currently 11 Catalan hospitals that offer this procedure, and that micropigmentation consists of “creating a drawing of the areola with pigments” and that the 3D technique that produces the three-dimensional optical effect of projection of the nipple.
This technique is applied to all women with breast cancer who undergo mastectomy and breast oncoplasty that affects the nipple and areola area.
The HUAV has a nursing consultation specialized in
areola and nipple micropigmentation since May 2022, and the specialist Aida Leal has stated that this technique “is key in the recovery process of women operated on for breast cancer, because it contributes to improving their self-image, self-esteem and confidence”.
TECHNIQUE
The Arnau de Vilanova de Lleida has reported that during the first six months of operation of the consultation, 12 micropigmentations have been practiced and that there are about twenty
waiting patients.
The procedure, which is performed with topical anesthesia provided from the same office, is “painless if the anesthetic ointment is applied, as directed by the nurse.”
“Micropigmented patients manifest a degree
of high satisfaction, ensure that their body image has improved and a bond between patient-nurse of maximum trust is created”, added Leal.
