The CNESST released on Tuesday the conclusions of its investigation into the work accident that cost the life of a carpenter from Les Constructions Binet inc. in November 2022, in Saint-Martin.
On November 16, the worker was about to lower a steel component to the basement of the building using a lifting platform. The steel component struck the carpenter after moving, which dragged him off the platform. The worker fell approximately six meters. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The CNESST determined following its investigation that the accident was due to the fact that the steel component slipped off the platform while it was resting precariously on it, then hit the worker operating it, causing it to fall. In addition, the coordination and supervision of the work method used to enter parts and equipment through the shaft that gives access to the basement, were deficient.
Following the accident, the CNESST prohibited the company Les Constructions Binet inc. from lowering material into the basement of the building using a platform and demanded that a work method for the lowering of materials to the basement is worked out by a competent authority. Work resumed after the company submitted a lifting method signed and sealed by an engineer and workers were trained. An expert appointed by the CNESST also inspected the lifting platform involved in the accident before it was put back into service.
