In statements to Al Arabiya.net, sources confirmed today, Tuesday, the authenticity of the news of the death of the Egyptian billionaire, Onsi Sawiris, the dean of the Sawiris family.
Onsi Sawiris was born on August 14, 1930, at the age of 91. He holds a BA in Agriculture from Cairo University in 1950, and is the founder and president of the Orascom Group.
He began his life in the financial and business market through a contracting company called “Ansa and Lami” whose activity consisted in paving roads and digging irrigation canals, but it was partially nationalized in 1961, then completely and Sawiris remained at its head for five years before he migrated to Libya in 1966, and worked there Also in contracting before returning to Egypt in the mid-seventies.
In 1976, Onsi Sawiris founded Orascom General Contracting and Trade, which later became called “Orascom Construction Industries.” His company’s activity expanded in the eighties and nineties, to include tourism, hotels, computer services and mobile phone services, making the group one of the largest Egyptian companies.
