Snyder had very ambitious plans when the DCEU began in 2013. He aspired to create an epic superhero saga with much more seriousness and darkness than the Marvel universe. The Man of Steel is obviously pivotal to this movie because the big threat of Zod coming to Earth is a big twist in this story, and it’s something most DC fans know all too well. And that’s one of the great things that can shape the narrative of this movie.
The first appearance of Ezra Miller as Barry Allen/Flash, it was on a Snyder tape, in a brief appearance on Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) before having a more significant role in League of Justice (2017). Her take on the character brought an element of humor and levity to the generally grim tone of the DCEU, which was well received by some fans and some critics.
However, the League of Justice 2017 was both a critical and commercial failure, attributed in large part to Snyder’s departure during post-production due to a family tragedy, leading to Joss Whedon (Avengers: Age of Ultron (75%), Much Ado About Nothing (84%), The Avengers (92%)) to take on the project and change its tone and direction. Criticism and public reception were harsh.
After League of Justice there was a general reassessment of the DCEU, leading to a change in strategy and less reliance on the interconnectedness of the films. Although Aquaman (73%) (2018) was successful at the box office, others like Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of a Harley Quinn (75%) (2020) o The Suicide Squad (91%) (2021) were not as successful.
