The glacier at the end of the world is about to give way

Grand glacier

Thwaites Glacier is located in West Antarctica. Nicknamed the “glacier of the end of the world”, this gigantic block of ice is 120 km wide and 600 km long. If it melted completely, it would cause the sea level to rise by one to three meters.

Accelerated melting

This increase would be enough to make several coastal regions uninhabitable. A study published in Nature Geoscience estimates that the melting of the Thwaites glacier is proving to be faster than expected. Robotic vehicles equipped with sensors allowed scientists to see that satellite data had underestimated the extent of the damage. If the melting continues to accelerate, this gigantic glacier could yield from one year to another.
