18 mars 2023

Yaoundé – March 17, 2023-At the invitation of his counterpart of the Republic of Cameroon, the President of the Republic, HE Ali Bongo Ondimba took part in the 15th Ordinary Session of the Conference of Heads of State of the Economic Community and Monetary Affairs of Central Africa (CEMAC), which was held on Friday, March 17, 2023, at the Unity Palace in Yaoundé, Cameroon.

Chaired by HE Paul Biya, President of the Republic of Cameroon, Current President of CEMAC, these meetings saw the participation of all the Heads of State of the member countries of the Community, in particular Gabon, Chad, the Republic Central African Republic, Congo and Equatorial Guinea.

The opening of the Conference was marked by speeches by President Paul BIYA, President of the Republic of Cameroon, President-in-Office of CEMAC and Professor Daniel ONA ONDO, outgoing President of the Commission, who called for solidarity and to regional integration, sine qua non conditions for making CEMAC an integrated space capable of responding to current multifaceted challenges, particularly the still significant consequences of Covid-19, as well as those resulting from the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.

These exogenous constraints significantly hamper the Community’s development efforts, hence the importance of completing the reforms underway to deal with them. After the adoption of the Agenda for their work, the Heads of State heard the communications of the Presidents of Cameroon and Congo

respectively on the file of the rationalization of the Regional Economic Communities of Central Africa and on the Program of Economic and Financial Reforms of CEMAC (PREF-CEMAC).

The President of Congo, on this occasion, called for resilience and the necessary diversification of the economies of the countries of the sub-region, through greater involvement of the private sector.

As usual, the Heads of State examined the reports of the CEMAC Organs, in particular those of the Development Bank of Central African States (BDEAC), the Central African Banking Commission (COBAC ) and the Bank of Central African States (BEAC).

As a follow-up to the 2019 Conference, the Yaoundé Conference concluded on the need to refine the ongoing reflection on the monetary issue.

The Conference of Heads of State also proceeded to the renewal of officials at the head of the internal bodies of CEMAC, followed by the decoration of personalities who have distinguished themselves by their actions for the benefit of the Community.

The 15th Ordinary Session of the Conference of Heads of State of CEMAC ended on a note of satisfaction, an opportunity for the President of the Republic of Cameroon to rejoice at the progress made within the framework of regional integration. These should be more noticeable thanks to the mandate of HE Faustin Archange Touadera, President of the Central African Republic, new President in Office of CEMAC.
