“On October 21, Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III held a telephone conversation with Russian Defense Secretary Sergei Shoigu. Secretary of State Austin emphasized the importance of maintaining lines of communication in the context of the ongoing war against Ukraine,” the statement said.
No other details of the conversation are given.
The Russian propaganda publication RIA Novosti, citing the Russian Defense Ministry, reported that Shoigu discussed the “situation” in Ukraine with Austin by phone. They also did not disclose the details of the conversation.
For the first time since the start of a large-scale war, Austin spoke with Shoigu on May 13. The Pentagon said: “Secretary Austin called for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine and stressed the importance of maintaining lines of communication.”
On October 3, Austin said in an interview with CNN that he had warned Shoigu “privately” against the use of nuclear weapons.
