The last round of this year’s Hungarian Football Championship brought unprecedented excitement on Sunday. Fradi had already secured the championship victory at the end of April, but it was open until the last minute of the final round to see who would be second after the greens and whites. NER’s two small rural teams, Kisvárda and Puskás Akadémia, competed for the championship silver. The former cut him 56 points and the latter 54 points for the final round, which decided everything.
Kisvárda took the lead against Zalaegerszeg already in the 13th minute, Leoni hit it close to the goal. In the 37th minute, however, Mátyás Tajti equalized from the penalty, and for a long time the match seemed to end in a draw. However, in the extra time – exactly in the 91st minute – Jannisz Karabeljov from Kisvárda passed the goal after Asani’s pass, so the home team secured the second place regardless of the result of the other match.
Meanwhile in Felcsút, the Puskás Academy could not withstand the pressure. In the first 14 minutes, they also scored two goals from Honvéd, who fled the relegation. First Nenad Lukics shot the top left up close, then he found Donát Zsótér a few minutes later. Puskás was able to beautify the first half with the goal of Artem Favorov, but in the second half they failed to turn it over, so Puskás must be satisfied with the third place this year. There is no great reason for grief, together with Kisvárda they can play in the qualifiers of the Europa Conference League.
Update at 7:28 pm: An earlier version of our article mistakenly stated that the two teams could play in the Europa League qualifiers.
The victory of the people of Kispest also meant that they escaped the relegation and will close this season in 9th place. MTK won in vain 3-0 against Debrecen in the last round, together with Gyirmót they say goodbye to the first league.
