The International Olympic Committee continues to lobby for the participation of athletes from the aggressor country and Belarus in the Olympic Games 2024, which will be held in Paris.
The International Olympic Committee called “slanderous” the statements of the Ukrainian authorities, who called the admission of Russian and Belarusian athletes to the Olympic Games in Paris support for war propaganda.
This is stated in the statement of the IOC distributed by Reuters.
“The IOC rejects this and other slanderous statements in the strongest possible terms. They cannot form the basis for any constructive discussion.“, the organization said.
Earlier, the IOC proposed to provide athletes from the Russian Federation and Belarus with the opportunity to participate in the Olympic Games under a neutral status, without the flag and anthem of their state. The Committee clarified that we are talking about those athletes who did not support the war against Ukraine.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba reminded sports officials that most Russian athletes have ties to their country’s armed forces. Now this army is killing, raping and robbing Ukrainians on their own land. The appearance of representatives of the Russian Federation on the international sports arena, according to the diplomat, is unacceptable.
After that, President Volodymyr Zelensky sharply condemned position of the President of the IOC Thomas Bach, inviting him to Bakhmut destroyed by the invaders. The head of state reminded the official that instead of training and participating in competitions, Ukrainian athletes were forced to take up arms in order to protect their home from invaders. Children and teenagers, who could be the future of world sports, died in the cities destroyed by Russian shells, but the aggressor did not allow these plans to come true.
