The Latest: District says 58 percent of teachers in Denver

DENVER – The Newest Teacher Strike in Denver (local):

16:15

The school district in Denver states that 58 percent of teachers did not report on their work on the third day of a strike.

The sum issued by Denver Public Schools on Wednesday is in line with the reports of the first two days of the strike. About 4,700 teachers work in the district.

The teachers re-marched in front of the schools before mass-marching to the county headquarters in downtown Denver, with signs and chants.

Teachers and school officials said they hope they can make a deal to end the strike. On Wednesday, the negotiations continued until the evening.

Schools with administrators and substitute teachers have remained open, but classes for 5,000 preschoolers have been discontinued. There are 71,000 students in district schools.

Denver school administrators and teachers are making progress as they try to end a three-day strike, but they still have to overcome a major obstacle to paying pedagogues.

The negotiating team, which represents teachers, agreed on Wednesday afternoon with much of the school district's proposal on how teachers can increase their pay based on experience, education and training over time.

There is still no agreement on a top district priority: bonuses for teachers in high-poverty schools and other schools that prioritize the district.

Teachers want lower bonuses to release money for better overall salaries.

Teachers said the data on the retention of these schools showed that bonuses alone would not help keep teachers there. They suggested that smaller classes, better leadership and a focus on student services will have a greater impact.

The school administrators and teachers in Denver have returned to the negotiating table as they try to end a strike for wages.

When the negotiations started on Wednesday morning, the teachers stayed in the picket for a third day.

Teachers in red filled the negotiation room in Denver's main library, leaving food and drink to members of the union's negotiating team. The audience clapped and cheered as the union representatives entered the room.

The first discussion on Wednesday focused on how teachers can increase their wages through experience, education and training.

The two sides also disagree on salary increases and premiums for teachers in high-poverty schools and other schools that the district prioritizes. Teachers want lower bonuses to release money for better overall salaries.

Teachers in Denver strike a third day, but teachers and school officials say they hope they can make a deal to end the strike.

Negotiations are due to resume on Wednesday morning after talks on Tuesday.

Union President Henry Roman (Ro-MAHN & # 39;) and Superintendent Susana Cordova say in a statement that the proposals exchanged by both sides have brought both sides closer together.

Teachers strike to increase their wages and reduce their dependency on the bonus payment.

One of the main points is the amount of premiums for teachers in high-poverty schools and for other schools that the district prioritizes.

23 o'clock

The teachers in Denver will extend their strike to a third day after the negotiations with the district leaders on Tuesday night ended without graduation.

The talks on Tuesday came a day after more than half of the city's teachers had given up the job in a pay dispute. Negotiations to be resumed on Wednesday began with discussions on changing Denver's compensation system to be more akin to those in other districts, which help teachers advance their education, experience and training.

The two sides also disagree on salary increases and premiums for teachers in high-poverty schools and other schools that the district prioritizes. Teachers want lower bonuses to release money for better overall salaries.

The teachers' union and district leaders took turns in public and took time to discuss proposals privately.
