The latest: firefighter among the injured in Andover fires

LAWRENCE, Mass. (AP) – The latest on gas explosions in Massachusetts (all times local):

Andover, Massachusetts officials say at least three people, including a firefighter, have been injured in the city following a series of fires blaming the authorities for a natural gas problem.

It was not immediately clear if the casualties were different from the four victims with burn injuries at the Lawrence General Hospital.

Andover officials say in a statement that all 35 fires in the city have been wiped out.

At the height of the situation, they say that 18 fires burned simultaneously in Andover.

Police said at least 39 fires broke out on Thursday afternoon in the communities of Lawrence, Andover and North Andover.

One man, whose neighborhoods numbered dozens that went up in flames in the communities north of Boston, says he ran into his cellar to find the room was glowing.

Lawrence resident Ra Nam says he was in his backyard when the smoke detector opened in his basement around 4:30. Thursday.

Nam says he ran down and saw that his cauldron was burning. He says he quickly grabbed a fire extinguisher and extinguished it.

Minutes later, Nam says, he heard a loud boom from his neighbor's house and the floor shook. Nam said a woman and two children would have gotten out of the house, but the basement was on fire.

Massachusetts State Police says officials will block power supply to residents of Lawrence, Andover and North Andover.

At least four people are being treated for physical injuries in a number of fires north of Boston, where the authorities are responsible for a natural gas problem.

Lawrence General Hospital says it has treated four victims with burn injuries but did not immediately release their conditions or the severity of the injuries.

Police said at least 39 fires broke out on Thursday afternoon in the communities of Lawrence, Andover and North Andover.

Residents in these areas with homes operated by Columbia Gas were encouraged to evacuate.

Police say Columbia Gas Crews are working to relieve the gas pipelines in the area. A spokeswoman for the company did not immediately return calls.

The three communities have more than 146,000 inhabitants and are located about 42 kilometers north of Boston.

Massachusetts authorities say a natural gas problem is responsible for at least 39 fires that have broken out in homes in communities in Boston.

A spokesman for the Andover Police Department says residents of Lawrence, North Andover and Andover, whose homes are being serviced by Columbia Gas, were called to evacuate on Thursday afternoon.

Massachusetts State Police say Columbia Gas is working to relieve gas pipelines in the area. A company spokeswoman did not immediately comment.

The state police say they have confirmed fires in 39 places, but warn that the numbers will continue to rise.

The three communities have more than 146,000 inhabitants and are located about 42 kilometers north of Boston.

Police chief Joseph Solomon in nearby Methuen says there are so many fires "that you can not even see the sky".

The Methuen police chief Joseph Solomon says that in Lawrence burn 20 to 25 houses. Solomon, who is in Lawrence, says there are so many fires, "you can not even see the sky."

North Andover newspaper's Eagle-Tribune newspaper reports that at least one house was destroyed and several others caught fire when a gas pipeline problem arose that supplies homes in Andover, North Andover and Lawrence.

The Massachusetts State Police say that soldiers are responding to the area to contribute to "securing several areas" of "several suspected gas explosions."

Lawrence police chief Roy Vasque told the Eagle Tribune that he had "never seen anything like it."

The newspaper reported that several quarters were evacuated.

It was not immediately clear if there were any injuries.
