Public transport in France

The French Minister of Health, Brigitte Bourguignon, made this recommendation on Monday, while this Tuesday Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne brings together the prefects and directors of regional health agencies to discuss the health situation.

(pam with AFP) – The Minister of Health Brigitte Bourguignon “asks the French to put the mask back on transport”, out of good citizenship, in the face of the rise in cases of Covid 19, she pleaded on Monday. This recommendation therefore concerns users of the TER between Metz and Luxembourg, the trains on this line being crowded daily.

Since the beginning of June, there has been an upsurge in new coronavirus infections. But what if a test confirms contamination? Here is a booster shot.

The minister spoke of the “citizen duty”, consisting in “protecting oneself, in the face of a very transmissible variant”, but also in “protecting others and in particular the most fragile” in confined places. All without “going as far as the obligation” to wear a mask. She also reiterated her call for a new vaccination booster, with the fourth dose for certain categories of the population, such as the over 60s and immunocompromised people.

France, like the European countries, is faced with a resurgence of contamination, in particular with the BA.5 variant. Brigitte Bourguignon, who should soon leave her post as minister since she was beaten in the last legislative elections, had already called last Thursday for “responsible citizenship” to deal with this new wave.

Moreover, Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne brings together this Tuesday, June 28, the prefects and directors of ARS (regional health agencies) by videoconference to discuss the epidemic situation of Covid-19, marked by a resumption of cases of contamination, a we learned Monday evening from his entourage. The meeting, which will begin at 3 p.m., should make it possible to issue a series of recommendations for the coming weeks, specifies the entourage of the Prime Minister.

Restriction lifted less than a month ago in Luxembourg

The obligation to wear a mask in transport in France (subways, buses, trains, planes and taxis) was lifted on May 16 due to the reduction in the number of contaminations and hospitalizations. Nevertheless, Olivier Véran, who was still Minister of Health before being replaced by Brigitte Bourguignon, then recommended to “all people who consider themselves threatened by the virus”, in particular the elderly or frail, to continue to wear the mask in the presence of a crowd.

Over the past week, two new deaths linked to covid-19 infection are to be deplored.

Also in France, the mask is required in health and medico-social establishments, for staff, patients and visitors. This is also the case in Luxembourg. In the Grand Duchy, the mask is no longer compulsory in public transport since Tuesday June 14. A return to the past is, for the time being, not mentioned.

Only long-distance transport will be subject to control of PCR tests or vaccination certificates, the French Minister of Transport said on Tuesday. Cross-border workers will therefore not have to prove their good state of health every day by taking the train.

If the Ministry of Health organizes the distribution of masks to health professionals to prevent the spread of covid-19, the mayors can take such an initiative for their inhabitants.
