A simple gesture, push the lever up or down, and all the drivers around know if you are going to turn, change lanes or park and can act accordingly. Or as described from the official Twitter account of the Civil Guard: «it is controlled with a stick (on the steering wheel), it comes standard, it is not spent (that noooooooo), and the ticking mola».

We refer to the turn signals, direction indicator lights that should always blink several seconds before performing a maneuver, well in advance to prevent other users of the road from our intentions, as collected from the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT ). Without a doubt, the best way to communicate with the “outside” is inside a car. And especially in certain maneuvers and in certain places that can be conflictive.
When driving through a roundabout signal the exit because so it won’t surprise the one who waits to enter or the one who drives behind. The incorporations to the circulation are another of the cases that require activated turn signals, either from stopped (leaving a parking lot), or moving (entering a highway). A well marked incorporation facilitates the movement to those who are already on the road and can facilitate the maneuver to those who intend to access it.
Also during an advance it is capital to activate the indicators. As is the change of lane of any vehicle and especially motorcycles, more agile and unstable and that can move faster and dangerously surprise others. Reasons enough so that the movements are always indicated on both wheels.
Two other maneuvers in which the “ticking” of the green arrow in the instrument cluster must always sound are the turns and changes of direction. In fact, activating the flasher should be the first thing in these maneuvers, always before slowing down. Doing it the other way around – brake first and indicator later – only serves to “scare” the one behind with a stop and prevent it from maintaining distances. With an added risk if the turn is on the road, where speeds are considerably higher than in urban areas.
Finally, we must bear in mind that the indicator is a “declaration of intent”, but it doesn’t give priority. Only in one case: when two drivers want to overtake at the same time and the one behind has not started the maneuver.
It should also be noted that not using the turn signals is one of the infractions that you see most often. But it is usual that, in certain maneuvers, shocks occur for not having previously warned with the intermittent. Using them is mandatory. And when we don’t do it we are committing serious infractions, sanctioned with 200 euros (art. 108 RG Circulation).
