The new Mercedes-AMG SL is here. It has four seats, an eight-cylinder and a canvas roof

The Mercedes-Benz brand, together with the seventh generation of the SL model, marked R232, has prepared a lot of novelties for fans of large roadsters. It was revealed directly in two top versions – AMG SL 63 4Matic + and AMG SL 55 4Matic +. This is the first novelty, it will not be sold as a Mercedes-Benz, but exclusively as a Mercedes-AMG.

The car has a completely new platform and its chassis weighs only 270 kilograms. It is also possible to mount the engine and axles lower than before, which means a benefit in reducing the center of gravity. This also reduces the return to the canvas roof that the SL last had in the R129 generation from 1989-2001. Another novelty is the arrangement of 2 + 2 seats, ie two front seats and two emergency rear seats. We judge from the photos that the rear ones will serve more as additional luggage space.

The images also show that developers have paid close attention to reducing air resistance by using a lower and rounder bow. However, the design is strong and distinctive enough not to confuse it with any other Mercedes. The chubby back is the same.

The similarity of the silhouette of the car in particular with the smaller and sharper AMG GT is not entirely coincidental, as is the cab, which has been moved far back. The second generation AMG GT, due to arrive in 2023, is expected to share a technical foundation with the SL R232.

But back to the novelty. In addition to the active rear spoiler, which can be adjusted to five different angles, and the flaps in the front grille, it also received an active front spoiler, which extends 40 mm down at a speed of 80 km / h and creates the so-called Venturi effect. In this way, the developers achieved a reduction in lift on the front axle at higher speeds.

According to the carmaker, the new canvas roof is 21 kg lighter than the tin roof of the previous generation. Of course, it is completely electrically controlled and assembly or stretching takes 15 seconds. The luggage will offer 240 liters of volume with the roof extended and 213 liters with the roof folded, which in both cases is less than in the previous generation.

Under the hood is currently exclusively a four-liter eight-cylinder with two turbochargers, known for a few years from every major Mercedes. In the AMG SL 55 version, its oldest variant is the M176, which gives 476 hp and 700 Nm. Together with the nine-speed automatic transmission, such power is enough for a hundred in 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 295 km / h, although the curb weight is 1950 kg. This version should consume 11.8-12.7 liters of gasoline per 100 km according to the WLTP standard.

The more powerful variant, called the AMG SL 63, got a version of the eight-cylinder with the designation M177, which is stronger. Here it has 585 horsepower and 800 Nm, which is enough for a hundred in 3.6 seconds and a maximum of 315 km / h; we can assume that both values are electronically limited. The AMG SL 63 weighs 1970 kg and has the same fuel consumption.

The gearbox is the same for both versions, including gear ratios. Thanks to nine gears, up to six can be a direct transmission, which means the first five qualities for acceleration and the next three for steady speed driving. The transmission is a classic planetary, but instead of a hydrodynamic torque converter, it got a wet multi-plate clutch, which is lighter and speeds up the car’s response to the accelerator pedal.

A novelty is the use of AMG 4Matic + all-wheel drive in both published versions; rear-wheel drive pieces are not planned. Therefore, despite the lighter structure and roof of the new SL, it is also heavier than its predecessor; for the AMG SL 63 version, the difference is not negligible 125 kg. It also contributes to an increase in dimensions to a length of 4705 mm, a width of 1915 mm and a height of 1359 mm, ie by 88, 38 and 44 mm.

Both variants also have a standard adaptive chassis with protection against dipping the bow during braking or lifting it during rapid acceleration. The AMG SL 55 version can have an electronically controlled self-locking differential at the rear for an additional charge, it is standard on the AMG SL 63 version.

The front wheels are suspended by a trapezoidal axle, at the rear is a multi-link axle, allegedly very similar to that of the AMG GT. What is different, however, is the pivoting of the rear axle – this is the first time used with the SL and is standard on both models.

Of the interior equipment, it is worth mentioning the 11.9 ”touch screen, which basically forms the entire center console. It can be tilted and the driver controls it with the latest generation of MBUX infotainment, which includes internet connection, top traffic data and advanced voice control. For an additional fee, it can also include the AMG Track Pace program, which records driving in dozens of parameters while driving on a circuit, so that you can then see where you can improve.

In terms of additional equipment, it is worth mentioning the headlights with LED Matrix technology, a complete set of advanced driving assistants, including semi-autonomous driving using adaptive cruise control and active lane guidance or following the car in front.
