Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin said during the Shangri-La Dialogue summit in Singapore that a war over Taiwan could be devastating and would affect the global economy.
“The whole world is interested in maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. The safety of commercial shipping lanes and global supply chains depends on it. And so is the freedom to navigate around the world. Make no mistake: a conflict in the Taiwan Strait would be devastating,” he said.
Austin also criticized China for its unwillingness to engage in dialogue. The US Secretary of Defense emphasized that America will continue to support partners in the Indo-Pacific region.
“For responsible leaders, the right time to talk is never. The right time to talk is every time. And the right time to talk is now. Dialogue is not a reward. This is a necessity,” said the head of the Pentagon.
It should be noted that before the Singapore summit, China rejected the US proposal for a meeting of defense ministers and company representatives.
