DAKAR (Senegal) – The groups of FIBA Women’s AfroBasket 2021 were confirmed on Saturday after the draw organized in Yaoundé (Cameroon).
The 12-nation tournament will take place from September 17 to 26 at the Palais des Sports in Yaoundé.
The teams were divided into four groups of three teams each. The host will share Group A with Kenya and Cape Verde.
An unknown remains regarding the winner of Zone 6 of FIBA Africa, who will join Group B. Group D will include a team invited to participate.
Here is the result of the draw:
Group A: 1. Cameroon, 2. Cape Verde, 3. Kenya
Group B: 1. Nigeria, 2. Winner of Zone 6, 3. Mozambique
Group C: 1. Senegal, 2. Egypt, 3. Gabon
Group D: 1. Mali, 2. Ivory Coast, 3. Invited team
During the preliminary phase, each team will once again face the other two in its group.
The best team from each group will advance to the quarter-finals. The teams occupying the second (2nd) and third (3rd) place of each group will play a qualifying round for the quarter-finals.
The winners of the quarter-finals will play the semi-finals, while the losers will participate in the ranking matches for places 5-8.
The match for 3rd place and the final will take place on the last day of the competition (September 26).
Nigeria are two-time continental title holders, while Senegal advanced to the final two years ago and Mali finished third.
