The El Canal de Salt (Gironès) Performing Arts Center plans to recapture the program later this year. It will do this thanks to an agreement in which different administrations are working. Specifically the two that manage the facility, the City of Salt and the one of Girona. However, before that, it will be necessary for the full town hall led by Marta Madrenas to do what Salt has already done, and to approve the dissolution of the current consortium, which will take place next Monday in the ordinary. The new agreement will also increase the budget of El Canal to 360,000 euros. In large part thanks to the extra contribution made by the Diputación which will be 200,000. The rest will come from both councils. Salt will put 100,000 euros and Girona 60,000.
One of the problems that has reduced El Canal’s programming has been the “expensive structure” of the theater as a result of the current consortium that manages it. Its dissolution and the subsequent signing of the agreement will allow the two councils to give more independence when making decisions on administrative processes.
The Councilor for Culture of the City of Girona, Carles Ribas, explained that the strategy is to “make the consortium disappear” and to count on a contribution from the Diputación “from outside”. This will allow the two municipalities to sign the collaboration agreement that will “give activity” to the center.
The councilor says “a lot of work has been done” but believes that they have “found a way out” so that by the end of the year the Canal can be “fully operational”. Until then, the management will be in Salt as it is a facility that is located in the municipality of this town.
The Canal was born in 2007 with the aim of being a reference center in Catalonia in production and stage creation. The management of the space was in charge of Bitó Productions, the company of the director of the Temporada Alta, Salvador Sunyer. Then it was the city councils of Salt and Girona, together with the Provincial Council, who decided to take over the management, but with a “costly” structure that has slowed down the programming.
