Hamburger eventually took third place in the Bundesliga 2 table with 66 points. He lost only one “eye” to the first Heidenheim and the second Darmstadt. Stuttgart, on the other hand, amassed 33 points in the Bundesliga – two more than Schalke 04, which were relegated to the lower division, but only one less than Augsburg, which remained.
Stuttgart had the advantage from the first leg
After the first match, it seemed that the play-off for the Bundesliga was settled. Stuttgart won 3-0 at home. This conclusion was supported not only by the result, but also by the attitude of the hosts, who attacked much more often and simply presented better football. The hamburger didn’t really exist.
In the rematch, Hamburger immediately went on the attack. The result was a goal by Sonny Kittel in the 6th minute of the match. The hosts intended to follow the blow, but it was Stuttgart who found the net after several minutes. Serhou Guirassy scored a beautiful goal, which after a while … was disallowed. Video verification was helpful in this case.
The second half was decisive
Stuttgart returned to the game shortly after the change of sides. Enzo Millot scored in the 48th minute to equalize. A dozen or so minutes later, he scored a goal to make it 2-1 and actually decided the fate of this play-off. The 20-year-old took advantage of the opponent’s goalkeeper’s mistake and increased the score.
In the last minute of added time, the score was 3: 1 by Silas, who took advantage of a mistake in the positioning of the hosts’ defenders. Stuttgart triumphed 6-1 on aggregate, thanks to which they stayed in the Bundesliga. Hamburger, on the other hand, will spend the sixth season in a row in the lower division.
