The National Institute of Industrial Property (Inpi) announced Monday, having issued the "Charente-Charente-Périgord" the protection of a "geographical indication", becoming the eighth product to benefit from this label.
The indication covers the manufacture of this traditional slipper, using the original technique of "sewn-returned", in a geographical area limited to the Charente-Périgord area. Approval will be effective from March 29, the date of publication of the decision in the Official Bulletin of Industrial Property, said the Inpi in a statement.
Nearly 500,000 pairs of slippers manufactured each year
The geographical indication concerns five companies, with 210 jobs. The Association for the Promotion of the Charentaise (APC) is delegated the defense and management of the indication. Approximately 500,000 pairs of these traditional charentaises are manufactured by these companies a year for a turnover of 5.2 million euros in 2018.
The protected geographical indication is a sign used on a product whose qualities, reputation or other characteristics, particularly in terms of traditional know-how and production techniques, are linked to a geographical area of origin. according to the INPI.
Seven products have already received the geographical indication
It is materialized by the affixing of a logo on the product, accompanied by the name of the indication and its homologation number.
Before the Charente-Périgord charente, seven manufactured products obtained the geographical indication: the headquarters of Liffol (2016),
Brittany granite (2017), Limoges porcelain (2017), Burgundy stone (2018), Perpignan garnet (2018), Aubusson carpet and Aubusson tapestry (2018).
