The way up! »Upper Austria Ladies Linz

In 2018, before the start of the “Upper Austria Ladies Linz” WTA tournament, tournament director Sandra Reichel turned her obsession into reality. Austria’s greatest talents got the chance to win a wildcard for the qualification.

With the UPPER AUSTRIA YOUNG LADIES WILD-CARD-CHALLENGE one tries to specifically promote the youth work in the female tennis sport and to introduce new formats for the further development of potential young talents.

The aim behind the project is to pay more attention to women’s tennis in Austria again and to set the course for this in the youth work.

The challenge offers young tennis players an international platform to show their talent and to get in touch with WTA players at the highest level. The aim is to draw attention to the young athletes and of course the greatest success would be if one could generate sustainable support for the athletes.

The challenge is advertised in cooperation with the Austrian Tennis Association and the regional associations. Of course, the project also enjoys international media presence thanks to the UPPER AUSTRIA LADIES LINZ WTA tournament.

Sandra Reichel, tournament director:

“I am thrilled that, despite the ongoing turbulent times, we can hold the Young Ladies Wild Card Challenge this year – in cooperation with the Austrian and Upper Austrian tennis associations. It is a matter close to my heart to offer our young players this platform. And the winner can then sniff the scent of the great tennis world at the Upper Austria Ladies Linz and gain valuable experience ”.

Marion Maruska, Fedcup captain and sports coordinator in the Austrian tennis association:

“I am delighted that Sandra and I launched this challenge together four years ago. It is great for Austria’s women’s tennis that the young players are given the opportunity to be part of a WTA tournament and then see where the journey should go. “
