The wealth of the “air billionaires” melts in the eyes – some can only dream of being among the richest

Portal coinmarketcap.com according to data, on June 17 the global value of cryptocurrencies was 902 billion US dollars (867 billion euros).

It might seem like a lot, but last November it amounted to as much as 3.2 trillion dollars (3 trillion euros).

The most popular virtual currency is bitcoin, which occupies about 44 percent. all markets, since then it has also dropped significantly: in November it cost over 67 thousand. dollars (more than 64 thousand euros), and in the middle of June – less than 21 thousand. dollars (20.2 thousand euros).

As a result, there have been significant changes in the ranking of the world’s richest people.

I had to pull the brake

Zhao Changpeng, a 44-year-old Chinese-Canadian businessman, has steadily climbed the ranks of the richest people on the planet.

The fortune of the founder of Binance, the world’s largest virtual currency exchange, at the time when the price of cryptocurrencies reached its peak, was estimated by Bloomberg at 96 billion. dollars (92.3 billion euros).

At that time, according to this indicator, he was eleventh on the planet.

But when the collapse began, the top ten can only be dreamed of. After the wealth has decreased almost 10 times, it now ranks only in 190th place.

The company even had to halt bitcoin trading for a while this week after regulators in the US and Europe warned about the risks Binance’s customers could face.

Two-thirds lost

Samuel Bankman-Fried, the founder of the cryptocurrency trading platform FTX, suffered a little less. The value of his assets has decreased by two-thirds in more than half a year and now stands at 8.9 billion. dollars (8.55 billion euros).

S. Bankman-Fried was considered one of the richest young people in the world (he is now 30 years old). And the logo of the businessman, who is the son of two Stanford (USA) University professors, is displayed on the cars of the Mercedes-Benz team participating in the Formula 1 race.

Virtual winter has arrived

Due to the deep winter of cryptocurrencies, every fifth employee will have to be laid off. Such sad news was announced by Brian Armstrong (39), co-founder of the virtual currency trading platform Coinbase.

This was a big disappointment not only to the employees but also to the investors. Because “Coinbase” had already managed to enter the stock exchange as well, and during the “bull market” its shares rose in price rapidly.

However, since the beginning of the year, they have depreciated by as much as 80 percent.

Accordingly, the wealth of the company’s manager also shrank – from 13 billion to just 2 billion dollars (12.5 and 1.9 billion euros, respectively). The value of his partner Fred Ersam, 34, fell by the same amount.

But B. Armstrong is not at risk of poverty – he is considered one of the highest paid CEOs in the world. His annual salary in 2020 was as much as 60 million. dollars (57.7 million euros).

Peaks and depths

57-year-old Mike Novogratz is the stuff of novels.

He was previously considered one of Goldman Sachs’ top stock traders.

However, he had to leave the investment bank because of the extremely noisy parties he organized.

M. Novogratz turned to investment funds “Fortress”.

He was successful for a while, but in 2015 he lost several hundred million euros due to bad investments.

Then the man decided to engage in cryptocurrencies, and his Galaxy Digital Holding is considered one of the largest players in this market.

“I bought bitcoins when they cost a hundred dollars and ethers at a dollar,” he publicly boasted as recently as last year.

However, it was not possible to avoid the recession – in the autumn of 2020, 8 billion dollars (7.7 billion euros) he had only 2 billion left.
