The first luxury brand is the men’s fashion brand Paul Smith. The Moral Ratings Agency, a lobby group that monitors Western companies operating in Russia, describes the company’s presence there as a “disgrace” and says Sir Paul should pull his brand out of Russia or lose his British honorary degrees.
A few doors down from Paul Smith’s Moscow store is a branch of Agent Provocateur, the luxury English underwear brand made popular by Kate Moss in the 1990s. It also stocks new-season designs, the Daily Mail found.
An employee told the British newspaper that the latest shipment of new material arrived just before Christmas and another is expected in March, just in time for International Women’s Day. The company’s current owner, tycoon Mike Ashley, is known for doing lucrative deals in questionable dictatorships.
As the third brand, Rolls-Royce also appears to continue to sell cars in Russia. “We stand for the peaceful coexistence of all world cultures, at all times and in all places,” the automaker said. These turned out to be empty words. On Wednesday, the Daily Mail found that five new models were for sale at a Moscow dealership for a total of 320 million rubles (£3.7 million).
It should be noted that these three prestigious British brands do not directly manage their Russian branches. Instead, they are operated through partnership or license agreements made before the invasion of Ukraine.
“It is completely wrong for companies to continue trading in Russia, given the murderous nature of the regime responsible for the deaths of thousands of Ukrainians and tens of thousands of Russian soldiers,” said Bob Seely, a prominent British MP.
“We must congratulate those who have left. They conducted themselves with integrity and did the right thing. But it is important that we now make sure that the companies that remain there realize that they are doing serious damage to their brand.”
