An affective robot based on artificial intelligence (IA) has been developed in Spain to try to help users to combat loneliness, express their feelings or emotions and improve their communication skills.

Baptized as Aiko and developed by the company Aisoy Robotics of the science park of the Miguel Hernández University (UMH) in Elche, in the Spanish region of Valencia, the robot has motors for body expression, microphones, camera and touch sensors with which to seek the most natural interaction possible and, thereby, try to improve well-being emotional user.

As social beings, humans need affection, entertainment and companionship, and this device “can mitigate the feeling of loneliness among older people and help them prevent mental illness and cognitive impairment,” the executive director of Aisoy Robotics, José Manuel del Río.
