Street pooling, a dangerous and prohibited act

Street pooling is the act of forcing fire hydrants to cool off and create pools in the street. When opening a fire hydrant, the very high water pressure can be dangerous for people nearby. In addition to being dangerous, this act is strictly prohibited. This can also cause flooding of cellars or car parks, or on the contrary lead to power cuts in buildings.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, the law provides in particular for a 5-year prison sentence and a fine of up to 75,000 euros for the illegal and untimely opening of fire water points (PEI) connected to the network of ‘potable water.

In 2017, a fan of street-pooling in Vénissieux was summoned to court.

In addition, the opening of a fire hydrant always requires the intervention of firefighters to close it.

To combat this phenomenon of street pooling, in 2018, the Métropole had “secure kits” installed on fire hydrants.
