Arsenal and Liverpool legend Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher have both slammed Cristiano Ronaldo, describing him as the Manchester United passenger.
They accused Cristiano Ronaldo of lacking a defensive contribution to the team and believe the Portuguese star is a “huge problem” for the next Manchester United manager.
Ronaldo scored once again in Man United’s midweek victory over Villarreal (2-0) in Spain, bringing his Champions League goals to six this season.
He also scored four goals and provided two assists in the English Premier League in what has been a largely productive return to Old Trafford.
Carragher and Henry believe Ronaldo’s individual stats mask his detrimental impact on the team.
“How can a club the size of Manchester United still count on a player who has [presque] 37 years ? He’s been amazing, his goalscoring record is amazing, but if he doesn’t score he’s a passenger in the game, ”Carragher told CBS Sports.
“You have to accept it, it’s a fact. But he scores almost in every game, so for now you can accept him.
“If Cristiano Ronaldo went four or five games without scoring, it would be a huge problem for Manchester United. “
Henry adds, “I totally agree, but the problem is, when your poison is your medicine, you’re going to fight.
“You watch the game [contre Villarreal], in the end Ronaldo saves them, but when they play they are sometimes exposed because they are not defending as a unit. And we all know that if you don’t do that, you can’t win matches.
“And, by the way, we’re talking about winning the Champions League and winning the title in England, not finishing second, third, fourth and going to the quarter-finals and semi-finals. We’re talking about winning, and if you want to win you all have to run. “
Carragher continues: “We watched Paris Saint-Germain twice against Man City, a team of their level, and they roughed them up for two games because they weren’t helped defensively.
“Look at Manchester United’s defensive record this season. I’m not just saying it’s thanks to Ronaldo, it’s the whole team, their organization is everywhere.
“But if you don’t have 11 men fighting for each other who are intense and work like other top teams do, you have a huge [problème] and it affects the whole team. “
