Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has been warned after taking Callum Hudson-Odoi off after bringing him on as a sub against Southampton. It came as the Blues laboured to a 1-1 draw with Southampton.

Chelsea boss Tuchel was less than impressed with Hudson-Odoi after bringing him on at half-time against Southampton.

Barely 30 minutes had passed before the German had seen enough, taking him off for Hakim Ziyech for the final 15 minutes.

It made no difference, though, as the Blues failed to find the winning goal and they drew 1-1.

In the Premier League, Tuchel has overseen a fine revival of form but this was a hiccup along the way – with his side set to face bigger challenges in the coming weeks.

However, BBC Sport pundit Garth Crooks has warned the former Paris St-Germain manager over losing the dressing room.

He could not understand why Hudson-Odoi was singled out while also praising Mason Mount for grabbing the equaliser from the penalty spot.

In his team of the week column, he wrote: “When strikers make challenges in their own penalty area it’s a recipe for disaster and Danny Ings’ challenge on Mason Mount underlined the point.

“Mount on the other hand is gaining confidence each time I see him. The England midfielder took his very first Premier League penalty and scored from the spot after an excellent assist from Callum Hudson-Odoi.

“What I did not understand was why Hudson-Odoi was substituted having been brought on at half time.

“Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel said the player wasn’t doing as he was told but he had then used all his substitutes with 14 minutes to play plus added time, so there was plenty of time for things to go wrong.

“Tuchel needs to be careful. Humiliating your player like that is also a very dangerous game.”

After the match, Tuchel explained his decision – insisting he was unhappy with Hudson-Odoi’s attitude.

He told BT Sport: “I was not happy with his attitude, energy and counter-pressing.

“I took him off and we demand 100 per cent, I feel he is not in the right shape to help us.

“It was a hard decision but tomorrow it is forgotten and he has all possibilities to start against Atletico Madrid [in the Champions League on Tuesday].”
