Ticks in the city: how to protect yourself, where to turn in case of a bite and where to vaccinate

We tell how to dress in the forest and where to take an arthropod for research.
We tell you how to protect yourself from ticks, how to dress for a walk in the forest, what to do if the tick did bite, and where to carry it for research.
Security measures in the forest
Observe the elementary rules: do not walk on the high grass, keep the middle of the path, rest on open glades. Remember: mites do not choose on which tree to sit – their love of birches is nothing more than a myth. So the decision not to stand under these trees will not protect you.
In order to notice the tick in time and not let it penetrate the body, it is necessary to put on a light clothing with long sleeves that fit snugly against the wrists. Of the shoes the best option will be high boots, in which you need to tuck in trousers.
Open areas of skin and clothing sprayed with repellents from ticks, on pets, which you take with you to the forest, wear special collars.
In the city center of medical prophylaxis they remind that it’s important to examine yourself and your companions every hour and remember that the mites are especially active in cloudy weather – they do not like heat and sun.

How to inspect after a walk
Straighten up to the full height and spread your hands to the sides;
examine the clothes from the top down, then – the sleeves;
especially carefully examine the ears, neck, armpits, knee folds, groin – a place with a thin skin, which is so like to suck on ticks. Ask someone to examine you;
if you walked with a pet, do not forget to inspect it.
Remember that at the time of the bite, the mite injects an anesthetic, so a person may not feel a bite and decide that they do not need to examine themselves.
Where to get vaccinated against tick-borne encephalitis
Free first graders in schools, pensioners in polyclinics and children at the age of 15 months are also vaccinated, as well as in territorial polyclinics. The rest can be paid at the clinic or you can buy a vaccine from the pharmacy and bring it to the vaccine room within two hours (keep the check).
If a person does not remember when he put the inoculation, he needs to conduct a blood test for the presence of immunity to the disease. Based on the results of the analysis, the doctor decides whether to put the vaccine.
Contraindications to vaccination:
acute diseases;
chronic diseases;
intolerance to chicken eggs or allergy to them.

According to the chief epidemiologist of Yekaterinburg, Alexander Kharitonov, 20,000 doses of vaccine were sent to polyclinics of the city for pensioners, a vaccine was purchased for children older than 15 months and pupils of the first classes.
In the management of Rospotrebnadzor in the Sverdlovsk region reported that at the beginning of April in the region vaccinations against tick-borne encephalitis were put on by more than 120 thousand people, including more than 46 thousand children. Vaccination goes on all the year round. The cost of vaccination starts from 400-500 rubles.

What to do if the tick is still bitten
Go to the emergency room where specialists remove the tick and put the injections of immunoglobulin according to the indications – those who were not vaccinated, did not receive a full course of vaccination, or do not have a document confirming the presence of vaccinations.
According to Alexander Kharitonov, if the bitten person does not go to the emergency room, you need to monitor the condition of the body for 21 days, even if a person has an inoculation. If at this time the temperature rises, joint pain and fatigue appear, you should immediately go to the hospital.

How to clean the mite yourself

If there is no opportunity to come to the emergency room, you can remove the tick in this way: make a loop of thread, put it on the tick closer to its proboscis, tighten it in the knot. Swing and gently pull up to pull out the tick. Treat the bite with iodine or alcohol. After that, do not forget to wash your hands with soap and put the mite in a jar and bring it to the collection point for ticks.
In Rospotrebnadzor another method is advised: grab the tick with tweezers or fingers wrapped in clean gauze. It is important not to tear off the proboscis of the tick. Keep it strictly perpendicular to the bite surface and rotate the body of the mite around the axis to remove it.

Diseases that are carried by mites
The most famous among the people is tick-borne encephalitis. However, mites suffer not only this infection, but also the causative agents of lime-borrelosis, erlichiosis, babesiosis and viral fevers.
Tick-borne encephalitis is dangerous because it affects the human nervous system and can lead to death or disability, like Lyme disease.
In this case, the symptoms of tick-borne encephalitis may resemble the flu or cold: fatigue, weakness, muscle pain, fever. This can confuse the patient, who thinks that you should not go to the hospital, and will miss valuable time. Tick-borne encephalitis can proceed very quickly: first, the temperature rises sharply, the head begins to ache very badly, the consciousness breaks down, and then coma and death occur.
With a successful outcome, a person will remain at risk for a long time because of possible complications: deterioration of eyesight and hearing, meningitis, paralysis.
According to the center of medical prophylaxis, Yekaterinburg and the Sverdlovsk region are recognized as unfit for the tick-borne encephalitis territories. There is a threat of infection both in the forests and in the city. Therefore, Sverdlov residents need to observe security measures in the forest and be vaccinated against tick-borne encephalitis. From other infections, which carry mites, vaccines, unfortunately, not yet.
Processing of parks, squares, coastal zones and forests of Yekaterinburg will begin after the city subbotnik , which will be held on April 21, the city administration reported. The main works will be held in May, the processing will be completed by June 1.
