Jurriën Timber actually did not take into account that national coach Frank de Boer would include him in the European Championship pre-selection of Orange. The Ajax defender has already focused on the European Championship under 21 with the Dutch Juniors. Timber, on the other hand, naturally hopes that he can go to the ‘big’ European Championship.
Like Timber in front of the camera ESPN appears, his election in the Orange pre-selection logically comes up for discussion. “In the first instance I went for Jong Oranje”, says Timber. The nineteen-year-old youth international also gives a glimpse into what happened when he heard the news. “I immediately called my mother and brother. They were also very proud. I couldn’t believe it myself. I don’t think I really realize it yet. It’s a reward after all the hard work.”
Many examples of Timber are walking around at Oranje. “De Ligt, Van Dijk and my teammate Blind: they are all great players.” Van Dijk will only pass the European Championship due to injuries. That can work out well for Timber. “If I’m really there, I think I will look at it that way,” says Timber.
Next week, the multifunctional defender will hear whether he also belongs to the final European Championship selection. Nevertheless, Timber is heading for the next week ‘relaxed’. “After I heard this, so was I. I hope to be there, of course, but otherwise I also have a nice tournament with the Dutch Juniors”, he concludes.
