Tiny blisters on the woman's hand turn out to be signs of gonorrhea spreading in the body

A WOMAN was diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection after she had blisters on her hand.

The unknown 20-year-old patient was diagnosed with a rash after appearing in A & E with gonorrhea.

One woman was diagnosed with gonorrhea after she had blistered on A & E's hands

She told doctors at the Southwestern Medical Center at the University of Texas at Dallas that the rash had broken out that morning.

They examined her and found that she covered her arms, legs, torso and scalp.

The patient also complained of muscle pain, fever, and pain in both ankles.

She then admitted having had unprotected sex with a new partner two weeks previously.

Rare sign of STI

Doctors who suspected an STI prescribed antibiotics to the woman.

Dr. Melissa Mauskar, who treated the patient, wrote in a case report published in the New England Journal of Medicine: "Blood cultures grew into Gram-negative diplococi identified as Neisseria gonorrhoeae, confirming the diagnosis.

"The patient's symptoms subsided with antibiotic treatment."

At a debrief, three months later, the woman told the doctors that they were fine and had no further rashes or joint pain.

Gonorrhea can cause meningitis

Also referred to as "clapping", gonorrhea is one of the most common STIs.

According to the World Health Organization, more than 44,500 Britons were diagnosed with the infection in 2017. Each year, 78 million people are infected worldwide.

Although it is easy to treat, if undetected, gonorrhea can spread to affect other parts of the body.

This is the so-called disseminated gonorrhea infection (DGI).

Rashes and joints that affect Texas patients are known signs of DGI, according to MedScape.

In severe cases, DGI can cause gonococcal meningitis, pericarditis and endocarditis – both infections of the heart.

Two-week incubation

The symptoms of gonorrhea tend to develop within two weeks, but may occur months later.

About one in ten men and one in five women, however, has no obvious symptoms, which means the STI may be left untreated for some time.

In typical cases, these symptoms affect women:

  • an unusual discharge that is thin or watery and green or yellow
  • Pain or a burning sensation while peeing
  • Pain or tenderness in the lower abdominal area
  • Bleeding between periods, stronger periods and bleeding after sex, although less common.

In the meantime, the boys should pay attention to the following:

  • an unusual discharge from the tip of the penis, which can be white or green
  • Pain or a burning sensation while peeing
  • Inflammation of the foreskin
  • Pain or tender testicles – though less common

If you think you may be suffering from gonorrhea, it is important that you seek medical advice from your local sexual health clinic.

Last month, two Britons appeared after hot sex sessions in Ibiza "Super Gonorrhea".

One of the women was the first in Britain to receive the drug-resistant exposure on British soil.

Doctors have warned against the emergence of this drug-resistant strain, which is referred to as "super-gonorrhea" because it is so difficult to treat. This is just the beginning of a much bigger STI boom.
